Being All Domestic and Shit

Since I decided to give myself a bit of a break from the working world and be a (temporary) stay-at-home-fur-mom, I've found myself overcome by a bout of domesticity that my mother would have been utterly astonished at.  Cooking, cleaning, laundry, dishes, grocery shopping--these things now make up my daily routine.  About the only stereotypically housewifey thing I haven't indulged in is soap operas (I confess to lying on the couch eating bonbons because, duh).

A stay-at-home-fur-mom's life could slip into drudgery if it weren't for the help she gets from her handy home gadgets.  D had an Instant Pot which he bought some time ago but never used, so I've been happily breaking it in.  Let me tell you, it's pretty awesome.  While there are some things it does a merely "okay" job of, there are other things it is spectacular at like quinoa, and lentils which now only take a fraction of the time they would on a stovetop and always turn out perfectly.  I don't think I'm going to become one of those people who believe the Instant Pot can cure cancer and bring about world peace, but I will definitely continue to experiment with it.

Another fun toy important tool for any Domestic Goddess is an air fryer.  I got a good deal on a small one and I've been trying out all sorts of things--right now I'm making dried apple slices! Here are some chicken thighs I did in the Instant Pot and some Brussels sprouts and fries I made in the air fryer:



I'm not going to win any awards for presentation, but I assure you they were delicious.

On the cleaning front, let me introduce you to Bill.  D got Bill as a "roommate" a while ago and he's become one of the family.  He's not quite as good as a maid, but you don't have to pay him and he's very loyal.


If only he had opposable thumbs *sigh*.

    Ah, Bill.

    I found with my Roomba that I would never set it going and then go do something else, which is what it's meant for - instead, I would sit on the couch and just watch it.

      I did the dishes and sorta tidied up the kitchen while he was doing his thing, but yeah, I was totally watching.

 It had been so long since he'd had a seizure--more than a month, and we had just been to the neurologist and she said he was doing well. So at first, I wasn't quite sure what was wrong with him, I thought maybe he was just struggling to get up. This happened a lot these days since the prednisone had weakened his muscles and tendons. But then I saw the wild eyes and the foaming at the mouth and I knew we were in full-on seizure territory. After a few minutes, it became clear this one was worse than the others. It wasn't stopping, and there was more foaming than usual. D ran to get our friend's truck, the one they have so generously to loaned us for Jacques' periodic doctor appointments.  The seizure just kept going, and now there was a pink tinge to the foam. Greetings, and Welcome to My Blog

It's been just over a month since I walked away from 45 years of life in Canada to begin anew in California, and all I can say is I have made a terrible mistake. Just kidding! Things are going great so far, so I have begun this blog to regale you with tales of boring minutia  exciting adventure from The Golden State. You may think I would be enjoying my first stretch of unemployment-as-an-adult by sitting around doing as much nothing as possible, but I assure you that is (mostly) not the case. I've been funning and adulting so hard I've only managed to read three novels since I got here! I don't promise any kind of regular posting schedule, so don't panic if I haven't blogged anything for a week or so. Welcome to the Apocalypse

 So, 2020. Amirite? What a shit show. But in all seriousness, I know a lot of my family and friends are worried about me since California has been on fire for what seems like forever but has really only been a few weeks , and now Oregon has decided it felt left out , which means I appear to be living on the set of some kind of post-apocalyptic film production except Hollywood is largely shut down so this must be my reality somehow. When I wrote my previous post in December 2018 about being homesick, I had no idea that a year later California, and the rest of the world, would be inundated by a virus that could potentially make me very actually sick.
